The CSE Wired Network

This document dicusses how to get your self-administered computer up on the CSE network.

For information on installing an operating system, you should also refer to that section of Running Your Computer.

Who can do it?

Wired connection to the CSE network is only available to staff and postgraduate students. Basically, if you are allocated a desk within the K17 building, then you can probably get a wired network connection.

Unregistered hosts

DHCP leases are granted to machines connected to the wired network even if they have not been registered (see below). However, these connections are limited (cannot access external connections via SSL, for instance) and ask for login details often. To obtain full external network access and remove the need for constant authentication, you should register your machine on the network.

Registration

First, you must register your computer at the New Network Connection Form.

Please be sure to fill it out accurately.

Once you have submitted the registration form, it will be sent to System Support for processing. It shouldn't take more than one working day. High workloads (such as at the beginning of session) will delay processing of forms.

SS will reconfigure the DHCP and DNS servers. After that, if your computer is connected to our network and configured to use DHCP, it will be allocated an address and you can start working. SS will also send you an email to tell you that your computer has been registered.

Choosing a hostname

When choosing a host name, please do not select a musical instrument or composer - these names are reserved for CSE-maintained computers. Otherwise you may choose almost any sensible name. If you don't care, you might just use username-laptop or username-desktop (or similar).

The name you select will form the computer's world-wide hostname. eg: username-desktop.cse.unsw.edu.au

When your computer has networking

Note that traffic to your machine will be charged to your IP Quota.

Be sure to set your proxies correctly.

You would also be well advised to look at Mirrors and local sources of software and other information in the Running Your Computer section.

To DHCP or not DHCP

We recommend that you use DHCP so your computer automatically configures to use its assigned IP address. Otherwise, you will have to set the address yourself. Currently, all assigned IP addresses do not change (static IPs) - even if using DHCP.

In rare cases, a computer will not use DHCP on our network (eg. a robot with a broken dhcp client). In this case, you would use a static address with the following details:
IP Address
as supplied by SS when you Registered
Subnet Mask
255.255.252.0
Gateway
129.94.172.1
Primary DNS
129.94.172.11
Secondary DNS
129.94.172.12
