Accessing the Internet at CSE

This document provides the information needed to setup your computer to access the internet at CSE.

Network Connection

First of all, you need to be connected to the network. This is either by a Wired Network Connection, Wireless Network Connection, or through a VPN.

Once you have connected, you should have an IP address that starts with 129.94. (or 10. for OpenVPN). If your IP address starts with 169.254., then you should read about DHCP#Problems.

Proxy Settings

All (non-secure) web access must go through the school's proxy servers. You will get errors if you do not use them.

Please visit the Setting Proxies item for details on configuring your proxies.

IP Quota

CSE uses a locally developed system called IPQ for tracking internet traffic usage. For a computer to be able to access the internet, it must have quota available to it. Normally, if you use DHCP, your IP address will automatically be assigned to your CSE username for IP Quota charges. If you do not use DHCP, however, your machine must explicitly be set to your username. This is done by System Support.

Please read the IP Quota page for more information, including what happens when you run out of quota!

Common Problems

  • DHCP#Problems - Problems getting an IP address using DHCP.
    • IP address starts with 169.254., or DHCP errors.
  • Setting Proxies#Problems - You have incorrect proxy settings, most likely you are using the proxy for something you shouldn't (e.g. https or secure websites).
    • Access Denied error viewing webpages (from the proxy)
    • Bad Request - You're speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port
    • This proxy server does not support HTTPS
