IP Quota at CSE

CSE utilises a system called "IPQ" for tracking internet usage.

How do I check my current IP Quota?

You can find out your current quota by running ipq on a CSG-administered linux machine e.g. login.cse.unsw.edu.au.

Or, you can visit the Account Control Panel, and view the IP Quota module.

You can also check out the IP Quota Allocation Policy for details on how much you are entitled to under the policy.

How do I get more IP Quota?

Please refer to the page on IP Quota Exceeded messages.

How do I see where all my quota went? (Usage history)

The Account Control Panel IP Quota page provides a detailed breakdown.

Or, for those low-level buffs, you can view detailed usage logs using priv ipq_summary (returns daily totals) and priv ipq_list (returns details for a single day). Use priv help ipq_list and priv help ipq_summary for help using them.

You will receive an email every week telling you how much of your quota has been used so far.

When is my IP Quota reset?

IP Quota (along with print quota) is reset in sessions 1 and 2. IP quota that was allocated in the previous session is lost and a new allocation of quota is made to each account according to the enrollments and professional activites of the account owner. The reset occurs ONLY on Monday of week 1 of session 1 and again in session 2 each year. It is not reset for summer session. However, students enrolled in summer session courses will be allocated extra IP Quota.

If you purchased extra quota then the purchased amount will not be reset. At the start of the next session the quota you purchased but have not used will be available.

What is the difference between "Daily" and "Session" Quota?

Daily quota is usually 20% of your session quota. You can use up to your daily quota each day, and your session quota must be spread over the whole session. Your daily quota also comes off your session quota.

The purpose of limiting daily access is purely for your own protection. We help you avoid accidentally using all of your quota in one day if you have an accident. If you need to download something that is larger than your daily quota (and you've checked the local mirrors first) email SystemSupport who will temporarily increase your daily limit.

How does IPQ work?

See the IPQ Homepage and also the more general IPQ documentation. Or did you mean to ask what network traffic is charged to your ipquota?
