Keeping your computer secure

As the user of a self-administered computer connected to our network, you are responsible for the security of your machine.

Unreviewed migration

This page was migrated from the legacy Taggi site (https://taggi.cse.unsw.edu.au/FAQ/Security_And_Updates/) and hasn't been reviewed yet. Content, links and screenshots may be out of date.

As the user of a self-administered computer connected to our network, you are responsible for the security of your machine.

What this means:

  • If your computer is connected to any UNSW network, it must run a current, supported version of its Operating System.
    • It must be kept up to date with the latest OS iteration and software patches; use automatic updates where possible.
  • You must set strong passwords, especially for root/administrator and system accounts.
  • If you have enabled SSH login on your computer, you should disable password authentication and use SSH keys instead.
  • If you are running Windows or Apple OS, you must install OS security software:
    • Microsoft Windows users should install Symantec Endpoint Protection from UNSW IT
    • UNSW supplied Apple hardware users should already have Sophos installed via the Self-Service app
    • Personal Apple hardware users can install Symantec Endpoint Protection, as above

CSG will block insecure or compromised computers from the CSE network until they are secured and updated.
