Allocating staff to courses
All allocation of teaching staff (both lecturers and tutors) is handled by the members of the teachadmin group.
Unreviewed migration
All allocation of teaching staff (both lecturers and tutors) is handled by the members of the teachadmin group.
They maintain the database used to control access to course acccounts, generate teaching allocation pages, calculate teaching loads and control pay for tutors.
All change requests (including access privileges) should go direct from the LIC of the course to the teachadmin group, not to CSG.
Changes to teaching allocations has budget/workload implications and needs to be approved by the HoS, but this is generally delegated to the teachadmin group.
To contact the group, mail teachadmin@cse.unsw.edu.au.
Course accounts
Every course should have its own course account, with the name based on the course code.
(For instance, the course account for the course COMP1917 is cs1917, while the course account for SENG2020 is se2020.)
This account is used to store the course material, assignments, exams, and administrative databases used by the course itself.
Access to the course account
People allocated as Lecturers and Supervisors are granted access to the files in the course account (eg. /home/cs1234).
They are also granted access to log in as the course account user itself (eg. ssh cs1234@login.cse.unsw.edu.au).
(See here for details on generating the SSH key you will need for this.)
You can check if you have access privileges by running acc on a login server - you should be a member of the appropriate \_Lecturer or \_Supervisor class.
For tutors
By default, tutors are not given access to the course account.
This is by design; only designated course administrators should be given control over the course materials.
If tutors need to log into or save files in the course account, then they should be allocated supervisor duties in the teachadmin database.
For others
It is possible in special cases to grant other people (typically academics) login access to the course account.
For details, see SSH authorized keys for course class accounts.
Assignment submission and testing
CSE uses a system called Give that enables online submission and automated testing of student assignments.
Give needs to be installed in the course account, with a separate work folder for each session. For details, see the Give documentation.
Recording and distributing student marks
SMS is the system used at CSE to enter, manipulate, record, and distribute various student course results.
This includes all forms of assignment, quiz, exam, and final marks (each of which may be manipulated and/or scaled as required).
It's designed to be used with Give and to synchronise with official UNSW enrolment records.
It can also generate official result records that may be submitted to the central UNSW student database system.
SMS is administered and run from within the course account - see the Give documentation for more details.
Prac exams
Prac exams are exams that are held in computing labs, using a modified computing environment that prevents the usual shared access to files and the network.
The specific changes depend on the requirements of each course; contact the senior course administrator to set up a new exam environment.
For more information
CSG doesn't maintain or support the teachadmin, Give and SMS systems directly. We're happy to take a look, but we can't generally help with specific details.
For help with any of these systems, contact the senior course administrator or members of the teachadmin group.
A3 Printing
The page describes printing resources for personnel and students of the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).
Short term loans of Windows Laptops
CSE operate a machine that dispenses laptops. It is on the ground floor of the K17 Building on the left when coming in the main entrance.
