Initialising your account in a CSE Linux laboratory

The Linux laboratories are located on five precints, see lab locations or lab map. They all run Linux based on the Debian distribution.

To initialise your account in one of these labs:
  1. Login with newuser as the username on the login screen.
    • It should not ask you for a password; if it does, inform Help Desk as the computer will need fixing. Try again on another computer.
  2. Another login dialog box will pop up. This time you will login as yourself. Enter 'z' followed by your student number as the username (eg. z1234567) and your UniPass for the password.
  3. A web browser will start up telling you your CSE username which will be a mix of letters and numbers eg. acbd1234. Write it down as it may not be so easy to remember later.
  4. Click on the link to the Conditions of Use of your CSE account, also known as "the Yellow Form". Read the Yellow Form carefully. Don't just acknowledge without reading, because you are legally bound by the terms. The first section, RESPONSIBLE USE OF LABORATORIES, is the most important one for you to read as it lists the rules for using the laboratories.
  5. After you've read the Conditions of Use, click on the "ACCEPT YELLOW FORM AND ACTIVATE ACCOUNT" button down the bottom.
  6. The webpage will ask you to enter some personal information to verify who you are and to set a password. You will need to set a strong password: one which is not somebody's name, or a word in a dictionary, and preferably contains numbers, capital letters and punctuation characters.
  7. You will also be asked if you want your CSE email forwarded to your Unimail account. CSE lecturers and the CSE School Office always send email to your CSE account, so if you think you will login to your Unimail account more often than your CSE one tick this box to have it forwarded. You can remove the forwarding later if you change your mind.
  8. You have now finished initialising your account. End the newuser session by clicking on the "Exit" button up the top of the screen.
You should be able to login with your CSE username and password within 5-10 minutes. The first login will be a bit slow, as your home directory (where your files and email will be stored) is created.
