What Network Traffic is Charged to Your IP Quota?
Presently, only traffic coming into CSE is considered part of your quota.
What is Charged
All TCP/IP traffic from an IP address that is external to UNSW, apart from the exceptions listed below. This includes but is not restricted to:- HTTP and HTTPS - all web browsing on sites external to UNSW
- FTP, SCP, SFTP, P2P (file sharing) - all file transfers from sites external to UNSW
- SSH, Telnet, rlogin etc. - all traffic over a login connection
- IRC, MSN Messanger etc. - all instant messaging
Gotchas
Several examples of network traffic that users didn't realise would chew up their ipquota at such a rate:- streaming audio - listening to music on websites e.g. internet radio;
- streaming video - watching videos on websites e.g. movie previews;
- leaving your web browser on for hours or overnight while it's displaying a website with changing content e.g. advertisements or tickers. The images in the ads are not large but when downloaded every second for hours on end they can add up to megabytes. Disable javascript or leave your browser on a static website;
- downloading papers from a website that you thought was part of UNSW but is actually external.
What is Charged Less
There are several local mirrors of software in CSE and UNSW. If you cannot find the software you want on these local sites, which are free, you can get cheap downloads from: Downloads from these sites are charged at only 10% of usual i.e. if you download 10MB only 1MB will be deducted from your ipquota.Sites in the .au or bigpond.com domains are charged at 20% of usual i.e. if you download 10MB only 2MB will be deducted from your ipquota. This includes sites where the .au is embedded in the domain, e.g. au.yahoo.com.
What is Not Charged
- downloads undertaken while you are dialled up to UDUS. These are charged to your UDUS allocation instead.
